A GMT watch adds a way to read another time zone, usually through an extra hand and a 24-hour scale. It is useful for travel, overseas work or keeping track of the local time for family in another country.
Read the 24-hour scale
The GMT hand typically completes one circuit in 24 hours, so its scale also distinguishes morning from evening. If it points at 18, the indicated time is 6 p.m. The ordinary hour and minute hands continue to provide the main time display.
Check how the watch is set
GMT watches differ in which hand can be adjusted independently. Do not assume every GMT has the same travel-setting convenience. Read the movement and model instructions, including any restrictions around date changes, before adjusting the crown.
Choose mechanical or quartz ownership
DailyTime lists NH34 automatic GMT models and a Ronda quartz GMT option. An automatic watch may need restarting after time off the wrist; a conventional quartz model runs from a battery. Compare the actual case size, dial readability and variant price along with the movement.
Compare a current model
